“So, you’ve been there nearly two weeks now, is that right? Tell me how things are going.”

“Ten days.” Julia adjusted her laptop screen so that the video focused on her and away from the sun streaming through the window. She could see Melinda more clearly. “It’s lovely here, of course. How could it not be?”

“So, you’re comfortable with not going to someplace like Healing Hope again? Or would you like for me to look for a similar recovery center near where you are staying?”

That was the last thing Julia wanted. “No. I’m fine. This was a slipup, and it won’t happen again. I need rest and no responsibility right now, save taking care of myself. I promise.”

“Good. I’m happy to meet with you like this as long as you like. I’ve counseled clients in the state before, so my license extends to North Carolina.”

“Oh, that’s great, Melinda. Thank you.”

“Not a problem. How are you feeling?”

“Relaxed, which is good. I felt a bit discombobulated at first, with so much time on my hands, and then I decided just to go with the flow.”

“Instead of being so regimented?”

“Yes.”

“How does that make you feel?”

Julia thought about that. “Peaceful.” She laughed. “And surprised at that.”

Julia shook her head. “Oh no. Before I left Louisville, I called Nick and told him what happened and to either take over my two cases or hire someone. He was reluctant, insisting I could work from the beach, but I held my ground. I do not want that hanging over my head.”

“That’s good progress. I like the way you stood up for your needs.”

That small bit of praise did her a world of good, and Julia felt a grin cross her face. “Thanks. Maybe I’m getting there.”

Melinda smiled back. “What about AA?”

Julia sat back on the sofa. She could still see herself in the little window on the side of the screen. “I found a group before I got to the resort and have been going weekly. In fact, I just got back from my third meeting. It’s good.”

“Great. Have you been in touch with Bill?”

Julia laughed. “Turns out the guy who leads the group here is also Bill, but he’s not my sponsor. Still, I think I should tag them Louisville Bill and Beach Bill.”

“Good idea. Do you think you need a sponsor there?”

She shook her head. “No. Louisville Bill is on call should I need him.”

“But you didn’t call him the night you relapsed, did you?”

Inhaling deep, she eased the breath out slowly. “No, I didn’t. I chose not to.”

“I see.”

“Well, I don’t really.”

“Do you want to talk about what happened?”

She did. But not everything. Not yet. “I felt so overwhelmed, Melinda. So much was coming at me, and I suppose I needed an escape. I thought I had a grip on
